Silk - Oversized Coffee Table

Oversized coffee table measuring 1180x1180 and stands 430mm tall.

This piece is softly influenced by old Japanese architecture and how they use angled support beams and built levels into their structure. A Silky oak slab with a brilliantly detailed grain, thoughtfully positioned legs carefully used to subtly show the influences of old Japan.

The legs supports the middle ring and bottom level and is carefully engineered in a way to spread out the weight evenly over the TIG welded joins to offer maximum strength and apeal. The middle ring gives the slab a floating affect but has deep set brackets that securely lock down the slab. Strong nut inserts are used in the slab the give the best strength as well as angle bar recessed into the slab to help minimise the possibility of cupping from the slab. All the braces have been flush routered into the slab so it is seamless at any angle. Flat Alan-key bolts with nylon washers allow for natural movement in the wood.

The Slab has been kiln dried. This takes out nearly all of the moisture, dramatically reducing the possibility of the slab cracking or cupping. This process takes a long time but is a must for slab furniture. Epoxy is used to join the two part and is use to fill in most imperfections in the slab. After the epoxy has fully cured the whole slab is put through a flattening planer so it is dead flat. Cut to size leaving a kiss of live edge on a couple of the edges, then sanded to 80grit. Any and all imperfections are then refilled with epoxy (pin holes and cracks and voids) and left to fully cure before sanding again with 80, 120, 150 and 180. The epoxy sections are continually sanded with 180, 240, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1200, 1500 and then wet 2000. It is finished in hard wax oil that is 0% VOC and non-toxic, that won’t peel or flake off. It is also hard wearing and water resistant. This finish can also be easily refinished later on to bring back to new condition. The epoxy is then cut and polished to a high sheen to finish off the slab.

The steel work is precision cut with a finely tuned in bandsaw and TIG welded for the best and strongest results. All the steel is then sanded to 120g and powder coated in a satin black finish. A final polish is used to protect and seal the powder coat, this is done to help with finger prints and light scratching.
